Cotton Candy

What is your first memory of cotton candy?

Was it at a festival, carnival, circus, local fair or amusement park?

Did you watch them spin it onto the cone holder?

The sight of cotton candy especially as you watch the sugar spin into that fluffy light treat just bubbles up delight, joy, excitement. It doesn’t matter if you are a kid or an adult.

Did you know that cotton candy was first called fairy gloss? It started being called cotton candy in the 1920’s

It was invented in 1899 by four men, one of them was a dentist! Its only ingredient is sugar. It was introduced to the public at the 1904 World’s Fair. It was a great success.

The only thing that has changed is how advancements in the machinery that makes it. The cotton candy machine used now was created in 1949.

The traditional colors of cotton candy are white, pink and blue.

Today you can find other flavors such as banana, raspberry, watermelon and chocolate.

Today cotton candy can be found packaged in bags at many stores. (And for those of you on Topsail Island it is sold at IGA).

It’s ok to treat that sugar craving. It’s summertime after all!
