Christmas Tree

Christmas Tree

Trees were brought first brought into homes to celebrate the winter season. Using an evergreen tree to decorate homes during wintertime was as a symbol of life amid the dark, cold winter nights. The tradition dates back to the Roman times – with them doing so usually around their New Year celebration.

The German tradition of candlelit Christmas trees was first brought to America in the 1800s. In 1846, the popular royals, Queen Victoria and her German Prince, Albert, were sketched in the Illustrated London News standing with their children around a Christmas tree. Because Queen Victoria was popular it soon became fashion in Britain and on the East Coast of America to have a Christmas tree.

In the early 20th century Americans began decorating their trees with homemade ornaments, while the German-American sect continued to use apples, nuts, and marzipan cookies. Popcorn joined in after being dyed bright colors and interlaced with berries and nuts.

Electricity brought about Christmas lights. And soon after, Christmas trees began to appear in town squares. And having a Christmas tree in the home became an American tradition.
