Labor Day

September 6

Labor Day

Labor Day pays honoring workers and recognizing their contributions to society. Labor Day came about because it was believed that workers were working too many hours and days on the job. It was originally hoping to give American workers time off.

Today many of those workers the holiday was meant to honor are actually working. Many stores are open on Labor Day. Essential government services in protection and transportation continue to function, and even less essential programs like national parks are open.

These days Labor Day is thought of as more as the end of summer weekend and is celebrated with cookouts, picnics and family gatherings.

Celebrating the end of summer and back to school is often the main focus of Labor Day and Labor Day Weekend.

If you are lucky enough to have the day off, shut off your phone, computer and other electronic devices connecting you to your daily grind. Go to a barbecue, like the original participants did over a century ago, and celebrate having at least one day off from work during the year.

But don’t forget those workers who can’t take the day off and are working. Today take some time from your festivities and thank a worker who is working on this holiday.
