“Over the River and Through the Woods to Grandmother’s House We Go”

“Over the River and Through the Woods to Grandmother’s House We Go”

To grandmother’s (grandfather’s) house we go;

The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh,

Thru the white and drifted snow, oh!

For this is Thanksgiving Day!

Over the river and through the woods,

Now Grandmother’s cap I spy!

Hurrah for fun! Is the pudding done?

Hurrah for the pumpkin pie!

I have memories of singing this song as we drove to our grandparent’s house. We sang it from Thanksgiving to Christmas each time we made a trip. We might have even sang it many Sundays on our way to grandma’s and grandpa’s house. Of course there are several other verses but this are the two we sang.

Spending holidays at our grandparents was a big event. It was a fun day with our cousins. Adults gathered around the dining room table, enjoying food and drinks, while we kids ran around the house and yard being – well kids. For us going to our grandparents was all about getting to hang out with our cousins. There were at least 14 adults sometimes more because my grandfather’s sisters were sometimes there too. And there were up to 26 grandchildren.

Family gathers don’t seem as large these days. I can’t imagine having 14 adults and 26 children running around.

What are your childhood memories of Thanksgiving? Did you go to your grandparent’s house? How did you travel to your destination? Was the traveling fun?

How are you getting to your Thanksgiving dinner?

As we travel to our Thanksgiving destination, the anticipation of the journey is just as much as part of the fun and excitement. Getting there is half the fun.
