Root Beer Floats

August 10

 Root Beer Floats

Root Beer Floats are a summertime memory for me. I don’t even like Root Beer, never have I liked soda much even as a child. But root Beer Floats were a treat that retains its bittersweet memory to this day.

Making Root Beer Floats was something my dad would make as a special treat for us. (Today would have been his 90th birthday).

Thinking about Root Beer Floats takes me back to my childhood when dad would scoop vanilla ice cream into a tall glass and pour root beer over it. Sometimes he would even top it with whipped cream! How excited I would be. It is a memory that I will cherish.

Root beer was first created in a Colorado mining town. It is said that Frank Winser thought that the snowcapped Cow Mountains looked like ice cream on top of soda so the next day he poured root beer over ice cream in August of 1893 calling it the “Black Cow”.

Today there are many different version of the Black Cow or Root Beer Float as it is known today.

Do you have a special float drink that your dad or mom use to make that just made you happy and excited just because it was so special for them or that you went someplace special to get?

Make yourself a Tall Root Beer Float and if you want to make it an adult version at some Bourbon!
