What Are You Afraid Of?

Usually we avoid things that feel scary to us or that bring out our fears. We even avoid them at all costs.

Yet at Halloween we embrace all things scary. It is the context of scary things that make either make us run away or think if it as a fun challenge and embrace facing our fears. We find ourselves laughing even while screaming in fright.

Scary things can trigger a response that isn’t fun.

Your first inclination may be to avoid scary movies and haunted houses altogether, but facing your fears can actually be helpful. Actively challenging your fears can help you work through them and handle them in better ways.

By challenging what you fear, asking if it is really true? Could this really happen? You can see if you are over imagining what is happening or could happen, and reframe the situation.

This is true with the fears that hold us back from following our dreams, for pursuing something we would love to do, whether it’s taking a class, learning a new skill, looking for a new job or moving to a new home.

Fear is normal. It can keep us safe. It can stop of from doing something that is dangerous and unsafe. But fear can hold us back from taking action towards things that may just improve our life. 

We are often fearful of things that aren’t life threatening just scary to us.

Halloween helps us learn to face our fears, challenge our thoughts and find our way to enjoying the walk through the fear.

What are you afraid of that is holding you back from something that you desire, dream or want to do but aren’t?

How can you face that fear in small steps? First ask yourself if you are imagining just the worst case scenario, then is it possible. Evaluate the risk. Create an action plan to take small steps towards you overcoming your fear or moving towards your goal.

You don’t have to face and conquer every fear, some fears are there to keep you safe. But if a fear is causing you to miss out on doing something you love or want to so or dream about doing then go for it, Face that fear step by step until you walk through it and enjoy the life you dream of having.
